Vybz Kartel Attorney Office and Documents Catches Fire Following Submission of Application To Be Released

Vybz Kartel veteran Jamaican dancehall artist received news on March 14th of his guilty verdict being overturned by the UK Privy Council. Since the overturning of his guilty verdict his legal team lead by Isat Buchanan returned to Jamaica to attempt to make a request for the release of the artist while his new trial is set for a new date in the local Jamaican court system. On May 13th his legal team filed a writ for habeas corpus application with the Jamaican Supreme Court. The habeas corpus application is a legal term that defines the right of the imprisoned to be brought before the court to challenge the authority to who is holding or imprisoning a said individual to decide if the person is being held illegally or being confined under the local legal laws. Vybz Kartel has been held since being arrested in 2011 and after winning the appeal in the UK has sought to be released from Jamaican prisons. Once his application is reviewed, he and his co-defendants Andre St John, and fellow dancehall artist Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell, will be brought before the court to determine if their detentions are still currently legal and lawful while they await a retrial. The Supreme Court of Jamaica has deferred the applications review and adjourned to May 29th and May 30th, 2024. Meanwhile his team in America and Jamaica await the review of the application. “Other than this new request for them to release the man we haven’t heard much from the prosecution side” said Lenox Butler music artist Lenny Matic from out of the renowned Vybz Kartel camp at Adidjaheim Records.

On June 10th the Jamaica Director of Prosecutions and team will present their case regarding the appeal of the initial verdict where Vybz Kartel and his co-defendants were found guilty of the murder of Clive Lizard Williams. Their presentation to court Justice Marva McDonald Bishop will determine if there will be a second trial or if the 3 defendants will be released if not already released through the habeas corpus writ request. In a short interview Isat Buchanan shared “The new application we put in today was already set to be pushed ahead but an official request has been made to the Supreme Court.” Mr. Buchanan advised that there are several new factors that have expedited the request to be made prior to the appeal hearing” hinting at possible medical issues such as graves disease plaguing Vybz Kartel.  “We are hopeful and adamant in terms of justice and fairness that the court will respect and adhere to reviewing our request honestly.” Attorney Buchanan shared briefly with us in an overseas interview with DJ Treasure Media. This statement was shared following the submission to the court for the habeas corpus application and just prior to the suspicious fire at his Duke Street Office that destroyed several computers and documents at his law firm on Tuesday afternoon May 14th.  According to statements made to the Jamaica Gleaner Buchanan called Kartel’s current status to be similar to ‘no man’s land, one would call it ‘La La Land’.

Vybz Kartel immediately took to Twitter/X to respond to the suspicious fire at the office of his attorney.
